This strenuous but highly rewarding hike provides one of the best views of Korea's premiere national park.

The Ulsanbawi (울산바위) trail is located within the stunning Seoraksan National Park.  The hike begins at the base of the National Park welcome center which can be accessed by bus or private car.  I highly recommend avoiding peak visiting times such as national holidays since it is a very popular hike (and for good reason!).  A great resource for travelers with a cell phone is to call the free tourist information hotline 24/7 by dialing 1330.

Follow signs for Ulsanbawi /울산바위 and you'll pass ancient temples, ornate bridges, and a GIANT statue of Buddha!  The hike mostly consists of winding stone and man-made stairs so hiking poles are a great resource to help you on the way up and save your knees on the way down.

The view from the top is stunning on a clear day.  The hike can be accessed year-round and offers unique and beautiful sights during each season.  However, take care if hiking in winter because snow and ice can affect climbing conditions and safety.

There are a few restaurants and snack vendors at the base of the National Park and a few water stations along the way.  However, before you set out, make sure to pack a days worth of water (just in case) and ample food. Kimbap (Korean sushi) is light, healthy, and can be wrapped to go so it makes an excellent travel snack.
