Keyhole Arch is a hidden gem tucked away in the dramatic sandstone landscape of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in southern Utah. Named for its unique keyhole-shaped opening in a sandstone fin, this photogenic natural arch offers a short but rewarding off-the-beaten-path adventure with classic Utah red rock views and solitude you won’t find on more crowded trails.

Trail Overview:

  • Difficulty: Easy to moderate, depending on the route and conditions

  • There is no official trail, but a short, informal path leads from the roadside to the arch across slickrock and sandy terrain.

Location:

Activities:

  • Photography: Best in the morning or late afternoon when shadows highlight the arch’s unique shape.

  • Hiking: A quick and accessible stop if you’re near Bryce Canyon National Park.

Permits & Fees:

  • No permits or fees are required to visit Keyhole Arch.

Parking & Access:

  • Parking is available along the side of the road near the informal trailhead.

  • High-clearance vehicles are recommended, especially if the road is muddy or rutted after rain.

Required Items:

  • GPS or a downloaded map — the arch is easy to miss without navigation help.

  • Water, sun protection, and good shoes.

  • Camera or smartphone — this is a great spot for unique red rock photos.

Pet Policy:

  • Dogs are allowed and can enjoy the short hike, but should be kept on leash and under control at all times.

  • Please pack out all pet waste to help protect the fragile desert environment.

Additional Info:

  • Best visited from spring through fall; avoid after heavy rain as the access road can become impassable.

  • As with all locations in Grand Staircase-Escalante, practice Leave No Trace principles.

  • The arch may not be signed or visible from the road — look for the sandstone fin on the west side of the road.
