Hike to Playa San Martin via Camino de Santiago

You know those videos you see of people scoring epic waves in picturesque destinations with empty lineups. I can't promise epic waves but this adventure surely promises the same getting-lost and off-the-beaten-path feeling as surf videos represent.

The journey starts in the small, deserted, beachside town of Celorio complete with tumbleweed blowing down the street. As you enter the town of Celorio via the main road you'll see a parking lot next to the soccer field.  Park here and walk north up the street and you'll quickly see the first seashell sign marking the Camino de Santiago. Turn right there and continue weaving through the cobblestone streets of the neighborhood, following the Camino symbols. When you come to a junction of trail signs.  Turn left following the trail sign to Portiellu Playa de San Martin.  

The trail will begin rolling through lush green farmland and apple trees. This is where it really starts to feel like going-surfing-in-the-middle-of-nowhere. As you reach the coastline, amazing views of the coast and the island of San Martin will come into view. First, you will pass a ruin of a chapel next to La Capela beach, which is more like a cove.  As the trail heads east you will see another small cove called Arenal de San Martin, however, the beach doesn't exist here on high tides.  Finally, after a few more minutes of walking along the trail, you'll round a corner and see a long wooden and stone staircase.  Hike down to the beautiful cove of Portiellu with crystal clear water and decent waves. Chill on the beach during sunset or trade waves with your friends in the morning.  Enjoy the picture perfect cove and the huge mountains in the backdrop!

Afterward, grab some tapas at a local bar just remember that nothing will be open during siesta (usually noon to 5 pm).

The wave is a peaky beach break so mid to high tide is better. Wind is usually lowest in the morning. Check surf report here .
