Absorb the beautiful dynamics between the natural, cultural and urban pulse as you journey along the Arga River into Pamplona.

Departing from the beautiful and welcoming Hotel Txantxorena, we connected with the Camino de Santiago at Calle 4 to loop eastward before diverging off the village roadways. Zubiri, Basque for bridge, did not disappoint with several pleasing river crossings to adorn the 25 km walk southwest into the bustling city of Pamplona.

This full day of hiking brought with it much easier terrain than the prior days, as we exited the rugged foothills of the Pyrenees and damp forests for glimpses of the temperate plains to come. Along the journey, we welcomed the immersion of historical significance. The preservationist shared context and conquering of the The Abbey, including the evidence of pagan symbolism and battle fortressing. This property with 12th century origin also hosts a section of the original path of St. James.

Smaller villages offered respite in the form of beers and basque cake if you wish to take the relaxed pace.  We pressed on, with the thrill of Michelin star dining for our evening.

Rio Arga carried our spirits through mining industry, field, black pine forests, rocky river sections and well into the medieval and the modern. Upon reaching the Magdalena Bridge, you know that the generous offerings of a warm bath at Sercotel de Europa and a five course tasting menu are near. These luxurious accommodations were well received and much appreciated during this journey of soul and sole. Pamplona was the first of the large cities on the Camino, offering architecture and tapas, shopping and history for those set to explore the city.
