The Old Field Bluff Trail is one of the marquee routes at Johnston Mill Nature Preserve — a 296-acre nature preserve owned and managed by the Triangle Land Conservancy (TLC) along the banks of New Hope Creek between Chapel Hill and Hillsborough, NC. The full trail network at Johnston Mill totals 4.1 miles, with the Old Field Bluff Trail serving as the centerpiece of a typical 2–3 mile hike through Piedmont hardwood forest, old farm fields, and historic mill sites.
It's one of the most rewarding short hikes in the Triangle — quiet, well-maintained, and rich with the kind of biodiversity that makes the NC Piedmont special.
The Trail
- Distance: 3.08 mile loop (typical Old Field Bluff route); 4.1 miles total trail network
- Elevation gain: ~223 ft
- Difficulty: Easy to moderate
- Route type: Loop
- Surface: Dirt singletrack with some rooted and rocky sections
The trail winds through classic Piedmont hardwood forest — oaks, hickories, beeches, and tulip poplars — with the bluff sections offering elevated views over New Hope Creek below. Sections pass through old field habitat where farms and homesteads once stood, now reclaimed by successional growth that supports wildflowers and a wide range of bird species.
Most hikers complete the loop in 1.5 to 2 hours at an unhurried pace, with optional connectors to extend into the full preserve trail network.
Highlights
- New Hope Creek — flows through the preserve and is visible from the bluff sections
- Historic Johnston's Mill site — ruins of the 19th-century gristmill the preserve is named for
- Diverse wildlife — white-tailed deer, wild turkey, beavers along the creek, and songbirds throughout
- Wildflowers — strong spring ephemeral bloom (trillium, bloodroot, hepatica) in March and April
- Old growth pockets — some of the larger trees in the preserve are estimated at 150+ years old
- Strong birdwatching — bring binoculars; wood thrushes, scarlet tanagers, and pileated woodpeckers all nest here

Seasonal Guide
- Spring (March–May): Wildflower peak, active wildlife, mild temperatures — the best season at Johnston Mill
- Summer (June–August): Shaded forest cover keeps it cooler than open spaces, but bring bug spray for mosquitoes near the creek
- Fall (September–November): Excellent hardwood color, ideal hiking temperatures
- Winter (December–February): Bare canopy opens up creek views otherwise hidden in summer; quiet and uncrowded
What to Bring
- Water — no water available on the trail
- Bug spray in summer (creek means mosquitoes)
- Sturdy walking shoes — roots and rocky sections, plus occasional muddy stretches after rain
- Binoculars for birding
