Try your luck at this quiet fishing hole...a great place to practice your fly fishing skills with easy-to-wade water.

After parking at Great Bend Park, follow the trail about 100 yards to a bridge which provides you access to a 5-acre island that overlooks the dam's waterfall.

While the Haw River is easy to wade, the island offers a number of bank fishing spots for those who would prefer to keep their feet on solid ground.

The best fishing hole in the park is right below the dam's falls. The Haw River is known for its large mouth bass population, but is also rich in crappie and bream. Rainbow trout inhabit these waters as well and are sought after by anglers.

There are a number of picnic tables in this area to relax and enjoy a bite to eat afterwards.

If you run out of luck at the falls, take a few casts at the Glance Paddle Access just down the road on your way out.

**Note that to fish anywhere in North Carolina, you must purchase a fishing license from the NC Wildlife Resources Commission. These can be purchased online or from most local tackle shops and outdoor retailers.
