The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is the perfect destination for up close encounters with baby elephant orphans who have lost their mothers to poaching. The centre is located a short distance outside the hustle and bustle of Nairobi.

Less than 20km from downtown Nairobi, Kenya, the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is easy to get to and well worth the visit! Here you will be able to learn about elephant conservation, sponsor a baby elephant (US$50/year), watch the elephants feed and if you are lucky, you might even get to pat one of the babies. You are free to take as many pictures as you want.

Entry is 500 shillings (US$5) per person and a taxi for the day is approximately 3,500 - 5,000 shillings (US$35 - $50). The centre is open every day of the week, except Christmas Day, between 11am - 12pm. Do not arrive late as you will not be let in. It is also a good idea to arrive by 10:30am as there is often a large queue and you do not want to be at the back of it. Best thing to do is visit the Nairobi Giraffe Centre at 9am and then visit David Sheldrick after.

Private viewings for sponsors are available at 5pm daily but must be arranged in advance by emailing info@sheldrickwildlifetrust.org.

Make sure you plan to get there at least an hour early if you want a spot in front! You get to interact with the elephants and it’s an amazing experience.

The baby elephants are adorable and I love that the Centre is rehabilitating them before they re-introduce them to the wild when they are old enough. Absolutely worth a visit!
