Description

Norris Geyser Basin, the hottest and oldest thermal area in Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, is known for its unique acidic waters and features that have existed for over 115,000 years. This basin is highly active, with daily changes due to seismic activity and fluctuations in water levels. Highlights include Steamboat Geyser, the tallest in the world, reaching heights of up to 400 feet, and Echinus Geyser, notable for its acidic waters.

Divided into Porcelain Basin and Back Basin, Norris offers diverse experiences. Porcelain Basin is open and treeless, with a 0.75-mile trail providing an intense sensory experience, while Back Basin features a 1.5-mile wooded trail with scattered geysers and hot springs. Both trails consist of boardwalks to safely view these geothermal phenomena.

PARKING

Parking at Norris Geyser Basin is free, but can be challenging in summer, with limited spaces that fill up quickly (143 spaces in total; 17 oversized; 5 ADA-designated). Overflow parking is available, but visitors may need to plan alternative times if all parking fills. Rangers manage traffic, and visitors may need to walk up to a half-mile from overflow parking to reach the site.

The Norris Geyser Basin is BEAUTIFUL. I recommend going in the early morning when the steam is really prominent with the morning light. You will also probably avoid crowds this way- we were the only ones there when we stopped!
