A peaceful campground on the shore of Lake Superior. This offers amazing views, a sand beach, and a great launching point to kayak to the Apostle Islands.

On a road trip from Kanasas City, MO to explore Lake Superior we stumbled across this amazing campground right on the shore of Lake Superior, Little Sand Bay Campground (34155 State Highway 13, Bayfield, WI 54814). After a long drive, you may want to take a nap :) Once you wake up, check out Morty's Pub for dinner. I suggest the Bourbon Bacon Burger and the Cheese Curds.

Back at the campground you can explore, venture down to the boat dock for some pictures, the sunset over the lake, etc. You can spend hours watching the sunset here and all the colors. At one point a group of kayakers launched into the lake to watch from the water. I highly recommend this spot for the views, especially if you are into photography!

Even though we didn't, you can kayak out to the apostle islands, which are slightly visible from the shore.

Reservations for the campground are available by calling (715) 779-5233, e-mail sandbaycampground@centurytel.net or by mail at Little Sand Bay Reservations; PO Box 79, Bayfield, WI 54814.

Camp at Little Sand Bay Campground Reviews

My first time this far up north was thanks to Wilderness Inquiry. Early Spring here with the snow knee deep, or the Fall with the beautiful foliage was an amazing time. The base camp has a main pavilion area and multiple tent platforms, and great outhouses. Not only that, they have a fleet of kayaks and canoes to explore Lake Superior’s ship wrecks, sea caves and the Apostle Islands. The lake is about a 15-20 minute walk away.
