While the full Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) road trail can be quite a challenging adventure, the upper section of the trail is perfect for a modest hike or trail run through some beautiful classic PNW forest terrain.
Just adjacent to the Middle Fork Road the 3.4-mile trail runs between a small parking area just off the road and the Middle Fork Campground and larger Middle Fork Trail parking area.
Departing from the trailhead on the western end, just across the Middle Fork Road from the Middle Fork Trailhead parking lot, hike immediately into the forest away from the road. Soon you’ll come across the first of 3 or 4 water crossings. If the water is low, cross the stream safely and continue your hike. These waterways can run very high in the spring months, so do use caution.
As you continue along the trail the trees open up, offering unbroken views across the Middle Fork Valley. Just as you reach the end of the views, you will be back to the Middle Fork Road on the eastern end of the trail. Here you can join up with the full CCC Road trail and continue. Otherwise, this is a great spot to go around and head back to the trailhead, making it a just over 6-mile roundtrip hike.
This is one of my favorite trails for getting out and trail running on. The modest distance and no super steep climbs make it perfect for beginners or experienced runners.
