A mountain lake in the G.R. Thompson Wildlife Management area that offers walking trails and fishing.

Lake Thompson is a great spot for fishing, walking, or just exploring the area with your dog. I've never had a problem with parking, but you're unlikely to find yourself alone at the lake on a nice weekend day.  Its a 10-acre lake, however, so you shouldn't have a problem carving out a little bit of your own space to fish and kick back. Keep an eye on the status of the lake, as the last time I was down there it had been drained (it has since filled to its capacity).

If you're coming from DC, take 66 West and then take exit 18 to (Route 688) at Markham, VA. Travel north on Route 688 for about 4 miles, you'll eventually see the lake on your left.

Lots of nearby vineyards, so check one of those out on your way back to the city!
