Ward’s Cove at Harriman Reservoir

Wilmington, Vermont

Description

Added by Tara Schatz

Harriman Reservoir — also known as Whitingham Lake — is one of Vermont's largest bodies of water, stretching over 2,000 acres through the hills of Wilmington and Whitingham in the southern Green Mountains. Ward's Cove is one of the reservoir's quieter access points, offering a sheltered launch spot for paddlers and a scenic escape from the more crowded summer destinations nearby.

Paddling

Ward's Cove is a natural starting point for exploring the reservoir by kayak, canoe, or paddleboard. From the cove, you can paddle into open water with views of the surrounding forested hillsides and mountains — the kind of scenery that makes it easy to lose track of time. The reservoir's size means you can make a full day of it or keep it short and sweet.

  • Calm cove conditions make it a good beginner paddling spot
  • Open water sections get choppier with wind — experienced paddlers will want to push further out
  • The reservoir is popular with motorboats in summer, so hug the shoreline if you prefer flatwater paddling

Swimming & Relaxing

The reservoir offers some of the best freshwater swimming in southern Vermont. The water is clean and cool, and the cove provides a more relaxed atmosphere than the main public access areas. It's a solid spot for a low-key afternoon — pack a lunch, bring the dog, and settle in.

Fishing

Harriman Reservoir is well-regarded among Vermont anglers. Expect smallmouth and largemouth bass, yellow perch, chain pickerel, and rainbow trout. A Vermont fishing license is required.
