Ski Baldy's Main Chute at Alta Ski Area
Details
Added by Tim Akers
Duration: 40 minutes of hiking. Outside of skiing Highboy, this is the quintessential run at Alta Ski Area. This inbounds, controlled chute holds good snow long after a storm.
Do you like hiking? In ski boots? Good.
You start the hike from the gate to Snowbird at the EBT near the top of the Sugarloaf lift. The start of the bootpack is at 10,500 ft of elevation. From there, follow the likely well established boot pack to the top of Baldy. There is one rather steep section on the bootpack, other than that is pretty mellow, just long, think 40 minutes of bootpacking long. You top out your elevation at 11,942 ft, the peak of Baldy.
Once you are there it is worth it! This is a step but wide chute. The high walls hold snow really well. Definitely not for beginner skiers. The views are amazing of Little Cottonwood Canyon's surrounding peaks from Superior all the way to Emma's Ridge.

The hike up is a beast for someone who isn't used to boot packing up the mountain, but it is well worth it and the main chute is an absolute blast to ski.
