If you are visiting Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park and are seeking out a family friendly, easy and short hike, look no further than the Chasm View Nature Trail.
This easy trail is located along the north rim of the canyon and can be completed as either a short loop hike or a shorter out and back to the first overlook. You’ll find the trailhead at the North Rim Campground.
The views of the canyon along this trail are fantastic, some of the best in the park unless you drop into the canyon. You’ll hike through Pinyon and Juniper forests and see many different birds as you look into the canyon to the river, 1800 ft below. Just be careful as not all of the trail has a fence along the canyon rim.
Bonus: These trees are a perfect spot to hang your hammock for a relaxing nap somewhere along the way!

Chasm is a easy but amazing hike to an fantastic view of the valley below. Parts of this canyon only receive less than a hour of direct sunlight which gives the canyon its black color.

Underrated and No Crowds!
I wish I could've spent more time here. The park was essentially vacant. There are 11 other overlooks off the main road to take in multiple views of the Gunnison. Unlike the Grand Canyon, most overlooks stretch over the canyon allowing you to have an unobstructed view straight down at the river.
