About this place

Added by Natalie F

My favorite castle during our trip to Scotland and Ireland - the view is outstanding!

To actually go into the castle (we did not do that, we just walked around the outside) you need to buy tickets AHEAD OF TIME ONLINE. It costs around £8 for an adult.  Buy your tickets here. When we went we just walked around the outside of the castle and didn’t purchase a ticket.

Fun facts:

  • The rock the castle sits on is 440 million years old
  • Evidence of Picts living on the sea stack of Dunnicaer was found by archaeologists from the University of Aberdeen. Carbon dating shows this is the oldest Pictish fort ever discovered.
  • In 1562 Mary Queen of Scots visited this castle for the first time
  • In 1717 the castle was sold to the York Mining Company
  • In 1925 the castle was purchased by the Pearson family. After it was restored it became open to the public.

NOTE: I would read this about how to get to the castle.  The actual address is Stonehaven AB39 2TL, United Kingdom.
