Explore the large sea cave on the coast of Sutherland Scotland, with a chamber 200 ft. long, 130 ft. wide and 50 ft. tall, at the entrance. The cave is completely free to explore and locals run tours that take you by boat to the deepest chamber of the cave.
Starting at the Smoo Cave visitor parking lot, you will make your way to the trail head and hike down the Scottish coast line towards the mouth of the cave.
The walk is about 1.3 miles long with little elevation gain. the entire walk can be completed in anywhere from 20 - 30 minutes but to explore the entire cave and surrounding area you should give yourself about an hour to an hour and a half.
Inside you will find a large chamber with a hole in the ceiling of the cave and a small board walk with a roof over it. This board walk will take you into one of the inner chambers of the cave where you will see a waterfall.
As mentioned before, tours will run through here by reservation and cost under $10 per person for adults and children. This 20 minute tour will take you deeper into the cave by boat where you can explore and admire the Scottish geology inside the cave.
On the way back up you can rest in the open seating area and overlook the ocean from above the cave. You will also have the opportunity to use the bathrooms that are in the free parking area.
