About this place

Added by Gustavo Quiros

Explore this stretch of white sand beach and turquoise water on Scotland's northern coast. This beach has beautiful sand dunes and cliffs with scenic vistas of the north atlantic. Walking this beach at night during autumn and winter will almost surely let you see the famous aurora borealis.

Balnakeil Beach is located 5 minutes North West of Durness Scotland. Putting "Balnakeil Beach" into your GPS should do the trick.

Once you have arrived you can park your car for free by old church ruins right before the path to the beach. There is a main path you can walk on, close to the beach, that will take you to the cliffs of the Faraid Head peninsula. Aside from that you can explore the beach and surrounding areas including the sand dunes and rocky outcrops.

Watching sunset from the cliffs is always magnificent and the quality of light reflecting off the water and white sands could make anyone feel like they have been transported somewhere tropical.

Over all this is a beautiful area to explore with little traffic and if you have the chance to see it at night during the autumn and winter months you should be rewarded with a light show that is out of this world.
