Deepwater Soloing at Tonsai
Added by Kyle Frost
Climb cliffs on a small island near Tonsai. Use the ocean as your crash pad. Full day of climbing with routes for varying levels of experience.
There are a couple of outfits that do deepwater soloing tours in Krabi, but I went with Basecamp in Tonsai. For 700 baht (about $20 USD), you get a full day of climbing, including water, lunch, and climbing shoes.
You'll start about 9:30, heading out on a longboat to a local island with a couple of prime soloing spots. Get accustomed to the climbing (and jumping into the water) at the first site, which has a wide range of difficulties, but offers a pretty easy traverse for those who don't want to climb too high.
After some time climbing here, you'll jump back on the boat for a super quick ride over to a local beach, where the guides will break out a lunch of fried rice with chicken (or egg, for the vegetarians).
The second climbing location is just around the corner from the first and provides some more challenging routes, as well as higher exposure. There are also a few challenging roof routes for the more experienced climbers.
Have fun and be safe! Make sure you hand off your camera to someone else for a bit...I ended up with tons of pictures of everyone but myself, whoops.

Price has gone up to 1500 baht, which is nearly $50. Basecamp is the only place to do it and they do it well. Good spots, good food, and you can even boulder at the linch beach site

When I visited this area I decided to stay on Tonsai Beach instead of nearby Railay and it was a great choice. Both beaches are beautiful but the more authentic vibe and deepwater soloing can't be beat on Tonsai.
