The Ernst Tinaja Trail, located within Big Bend National Park near Alpine, Texas, offers hikers a unique glimpse into the region’s geological wonders.

Trail Overview

This out-and-back trail spans approximately 1 mile round trip, leading visitors through a limestone canyon adorned with vibrant orange striations and fossils of giant oysters. The highlight is the Ernst Tinaja—a 13-foot deep natural rock pool that retains water year-round.

Access and Parking

To reach the trailhead, visitors must navigate the Old Ore Road, a rugged, primitive dirt road requiring a high-clearance, four-wheel-drive vehicle. The trailhead is situated about 5 miles from the road’s southern entrance near Rio Grande Village. A small parking area is available at the trailhead, but no restroom facilities are provided.

Hours of Operation

Big Bend National Park is open 24 hours a day, year-round. However, visitor centers have varying hours:

Panther Junction: 9 AM – 5 PM

Chisos Basin: 8:30 AM – 4 PM (closed for lunch)

Castolon (Nov-April): 10 AM – 4 PM (closed for lunch)

Persimmon Gap: 9 AM – 4 PM (closed for lunch)

Rio Grande Village (Nov-April): 8:30 AM – 4 PM (closed for lunch)

Fees and Permits

A park entrance fee is required for all visitors. For those interested in camping, the Ernst Tinaja primitive roadside campsite (ET-1) requires a backcountry permit, obtainable up to 24 hours in advance at the Panther Junction or Chisos Basin Visitor Centers.

Pet Policy

Pets are not permitted on any trails within Big Bend National Park, including the Ernst Tinaja Trail.

Safety Considerations

Tinaja Hazards: The Ernst Tinaja’s steep, smooth walls can trap wildlife seeking water. Visitors should exercise caution near the edges to avoid accidental falls.

Trail Conditions: The trail features deep sand and stretches of bedrock. While mostly flat, some sections may require bouldering, making them less suitable for young children.

Vehicle Requirements: Accessing the trailhead necessitates a high-clearance, four-wheel-drive vehicle due to the challenging conditions of Old Ore Road.

Additional Information

The trail offers opportunities to observe unique geological formations and fossils. Hikers are advised to carry sufficient water, wear appropriate footwear, and be mindful of weather conditions, as flash floods can occur in the canyon.

So many nooks and crannies to explore here! This hike takes you through a wash for a short time, the loose rocks make eqch step just a tiny bit difficult buts its not far till you reach the first big tinaja. Hike up amd around to continue exploring the canyon till it deadends at another pool. Look for hidden vaves, holes and cool formations! Watch out for bees near the water.
