Important Access Information

PRIVATE PROPERTY WARNING: This trail crosses private land. Accessing this waterfall without the owner's permission constitutes trespassing. Please respect private property rights and local regulations.

Trail Directions (If Permission Obtained)

Rattlesnake Falls is a little difficult to find. If you have received permission from the landowner, here are the directions:

Parking & Trailhead: You can park on the side of the highway where there is a large turnout (see map marker). Cross the highway at the marker, where you will climb an embankment.

Trail Route: Once up the embankment, you'll see an ATV-type trail that you'll follow to the left. The trail descends a steep hill with a lot of brush, as this trail isn't highly trafficked.

Reaching the Falls: You will hear and soon see the top of the waterfall as you descend. You have two options:

  1. Make your way down the steep hill on the near side (more difficult)
  2. Cross the stream and walk down the opposite side of the waterfall for a much safer and easier climb down to the base (recommended)

Wildlife: This waterfall has lots of turtles that are usually basking in the sun on the rocks, so be on the lookout for these frequent visitors.

Return Route: When you're ready, retrace your steps back up over the waterfall, over the stream, and back up the hill to your vehicle.

Mental Health & Wellness Benefits of Waterfall Hiking

When accessed legally and responsibly, waterfall hikes like Rattlesnake Falls offer significant mental health benefits through what researchers call "nature therapy" and "water therapy."

Why Waterfalls Are Great for Mental Wellness:

Natural Stress Relief Research shows that the sound and sight of waterfalls can reduce cortisol (your body's stress hormone) significantly. The combination of:

  • White noise of cascading water (proven to promote relaxation)
  • Negative ions from the waterfall (naturally boost mood and energy)
  • Forest environment (reduces anxiety and mental fatigue)
  • Physical movement on the trail (releases endorphins)

creates a powerful natural antidepressant effect.

Mindfulness & Present-Moment Awareness The sensory experience of a waterfall—the sound, the mist, the visual beauty—naturally draws you into the present moment. This makes waterfall destinations excellent for mindfulness practice and reducing ruminating thoughts that contribute to anxiety and depression.

Sunshine & Vitamin D Benefits Time spent outdoors reaching waterfalls provides essential vitamin D from sun exposure, which plays a crucial role in mood regulation. The physical activity combined with natural light exposure can significantly improve sleep quality and reduce symptoms of seasonal depression.

Connection with Nature Observing wildlife like the turtles at Rattlesnake Falls, feeling the mist from the cascade, and being surrounded by Tennessee's natural landscape creates what scientists call "nature connectedness"—a proven factor in improved mental well-being and life satisfaction.

Physical Exercise Benefits The moderate hike with steep sections provides cardiovascular exercise, which releases endorphins and improves mood. The sense of accomplishment from navigating challenging terrain builds confidence and resilience.

WELLNESS TIP: When visiting any waterfall (with proper permission), take 10-15 minutes to sit quietly near the base. The combination of water sounds, natural surroundings, and deep breathing creates a powerful meditation experience.

Leave No Trace: Critical for Private Property Access

BE SURE TO PICK UP ALL TRASH YOU HAVE. Do not leave behind anything, even though you will notice lots of other people have not adhered to the Leave No Trace policy that most respectable hikers follow.

Why This Matters: This property can be closed permanently to outsiders if people aren't respectful enough to bring their trash out with them. Private landowners who allow public access are doing hikers a favor—don't ruin it for everyone.

Leave No Trace Principles:

  • Pack out everything you pack in
  • Stay on established trails
  • Don't disturb wildlife (including turtles)
  • Respect private property boundaries
  • Leave gates as you found them
  • Be courteous to landowners and other visitors

Safety & Visitor Tips

CRITICAL: Always obtain landowner permission before accessing private property

Trail Safety:

  • Watch your footing on steep descents
  • Trail can be brushy and overgrown
  • Stream crossing may be slippery
  • Wear sturdy hiking shoes with good traction

What to Bring:

  • Sturdy footwear for steep, brushy trail
  • Water and snacks
  • Trash bag (pack out everything)
  • Camera for waterfall and turtle photography
  • Sun protection for exposed areas

Best Practices:

  • Visit during daylight hours only
  • Check weather before going (trail dangerous when wet)
  • Let someone know your plans
  • Be respectful and quiet to maintain access
  • Follow all posted signs and property boundaries

Rattlesnake Falls (CLOSED) Reviews

I was not able to find Rattlesnake Falls today. Was informed by the nearby gas station attendant that it was closed due to people leaving their trash. Stillhouse falls is nearby and open and an easy hike.

The parking area is easy to miss, but there is a little pull out off the highway that leads down to small parking area. The hike to the waterfall is easy, but this goes to the top of the waterfall. It looks like a difficult climb down, but if you cross the creek and go to the right, there is only a short section that is hard. My 8 year old is scared of heights, but he was able to do it.
