Hike to "Troll Rock" for 360° view over the valleys and glaciers surrounding Longyearbyen. Troll rock is an impressive 850 meters high.
Trollsteinen means "Troll Rock" in Norwegian and the legend says that once upon a time a troll left his safe home inside the mountain, to hike up to the top. But the sun started to shine and as we all now trolls turns into rocks when the sun shines on them. So for this hike you have the opportunity to visit a real Troll Rock!
The hike starts from Nybyen, the houses at the end of the road in Longyearbyen. First you need to cross the river, which is a lot of small streams forming a wide river delta. Depending of it is a hot day or if it has been raining a lot, it can be high water and tricky to cross. You continue up on the left side of the Sarkofagen mountain, threw the morain landscape, until you reach Larsbreen "Lars Glacier". From here you can see Trollsteinen on your left side. Cross the glacier and continue up the slope until you reach Trollsteinen!
Since this hike goes in polar bear terrain it is very important that you carry a weapon and nows how to use it or that you go hiking together with someone that has a weapon and knows how to use it for polar bear protection.
