Description

Added by Signe Dahlberg

This is a full day hike to the highest mountain around Longyearbyen.

Nordenskiöldtoppen is the highest peak in the area surrounding Longyearbyen. 1053 meters over sea level you will find the old metrological station set up by the famous explorer Nordenskiöld himself. In clear weather you will have a stunning view over Isfjorden and you can see almost all the way to Barentsburg, our neighbor town in the west.

Since this hike goes in polar bear terrain it is very important that you carry a weapon and nows how to use it or that you go hiking together with someone that has a weapon and knows how to use it for polar bear protection.A good starting point is Nybyen, the houses at the end of the road in Longyearbyen, or Huset, the big white restaurant building closeby. Follow the road up to Sverdrupbyen, and when the road ends just continue the same direction on the little track. You will see the Longyear Glacier in front of you and you want to turn right and start to hike uphill threw a rivervalley called Tverrdalen. You will soon find yourself up at Platåfjellet and here you should turn to the left and follow the ridge up to the top of Nordenskiöldtoppen.
