Dividing Rapid City's East and West sides, the Skyline Wilderness Area is a 150-acre park that features numerous walking, biking and hiking trails. This area can also be enjoyed as a beautiful drive that offers one of the best views of Rapid City.
The road stretches about two miles long and gives countless scenic views of the entire city. There are multiple parking locations and overlooks to stop and take in the views. With six trailheads to choose from, there are plenty of options for hikers of all skill levels. The roundtrip distances can range from 3 to 6 miles and at its maximum, elevation gain can get up to 891′.
Some attractions to keep your eyes out for are Dinosaur Park, the Stonewall Overlook, the Amphitheater, the Petrified Forest Trailhead, and Hangman's Tree. All of these stops have their own little place in history telling the story behind Rapid City.
The Skyline Wilderness Area's easy access and close proximity to the city make it ideal for a quick day-hike, a lunch break spot, or the perfect place to end the day enjoying the sunset.
