Canoe at Sylvan Lake

Sylvan Lake is a picturesque lake located in Custer State Park, in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The lake area offers multiple activities such as picnic places, rock climbing, small rental boats, swimming, fishing and hiking trails. 

One of the most relaxing ways to explore this gorgeous lake is to rent a canoe at the Sylvan Lake Lodge and paddle your way around all the unique nooks and crannies this area has to offer. 

Though it is a relatively small lake, it is very easy to find your own peaceful spot to enjoy the water to yourself. It's completely your choice as to whether that be weaving in between the towering boulders that gently erupt from the water's surface, or pulled up alongside the walkway nestled amongst the rock outcroppings to the west to snap that perfect boat selfie. Maybe consider plopping down on the beach near the north edge to enjoy your own picnic. 

The canoe sits 1-3 people and has plenty of space for bags, floaties and a small cooler. They are rented out by the hour and life vests are provided. 

It would be very easy to make an entire day exploring Sylvan Lake. There is a gravel walkway along the edge that leads to the wooden bridge for a perfect viewing spot of the entire lake. This path also offers easy photo opportunities from the shore of the adventurous canoers paddling their way all over the lake. Don't forget to grab your sunglasses, maybe a hat, some sunscreen, snacks and water before heading out to the open water.
