At 100-feet, the word "mountain" may be a misnomer, but this Sandhills-Region oddity is worth a detour.
By all appearances, Sand Hills State Forest is well-maintained and seldom-used. This particular adventure refers to the Sugarloaf Mountain Recreation Area, but there's more of the forest to explore.
Sugarloaf mountain is a geographical oddity that provides a pleasant view of the scrub-pine forests of Central South Carolina. Don't mistake this for a nature trail (there's a nice one just down the dirt road), but rather a nice spot to take pictures and have a snack.
There are equine trails here, as well as a horse campground. The general-audience campground is spread out and well-appointed. They would be ideal for groups. There is also a small pond and bird blind nearby.
You could spend 10 minutes or an afternoon at this recreation area, but do go check Sugarloaf Mountain off your Palmetto State to-do list.
