Earn your Table Mountain summit by blasting up the most direct route via Platteklip Gorge where your eyes will be rewarded with 360-degree views of Cape Town and the infamous meeting point of the Indian and Atlantic Oceans.
Platteklip Gorge is the shortest route to hike to the summit of Table Mountain. It’s the most direct because the only direction the route takes you is up! The trail begins on Tafelberg Road just past the cableway station at 1,180 ft (360 m). From the get go the trail is steep and if you can imagine it ends steeper. In just under 2 miles the trail ascends 2,300 feet, taking you to a summit elevation of 3,477 ft (1,060 m).
Yes, in just less than 2 miles you will ascend 2,300 feet on a staircase of stone steps and switchbacks. In total the route covers roughly 4 miles (6 km) roundtrip. The ascent portion can take anywhere from 90 minutes for those in good shape, with others taking anywhere from 2-3 hours. Expect the descent to take a similar amount of time, as the steep and tall steps provide little relief on your tired legs on the way down.
Even though Platteklip Gorge is not considered the most scenic or technical route on the mountain, it still provides good views of the coast, Devil’s Peak and Lionshead, along with a serious burn for your quads! And let’s be real, any day on the mountain is a good day no matter what the route!
Notes: Table Mountain’s geographic location on the coast between two oceans leads to quick and sometimes unexpected weather fluctuations. Dense clouds often blanket the top and higher portions of all climbs, so be aware of the weather. Platteklip Gorge is also very exposed, especially in the summer, so its best to hike before the sun gets too hot and begins to bake the route.
There’s also a restaurant at the summit so if you like to reward your summit with a cold adult beverage or soft serve, bring some Rand!
