The Castle Rock Trail is a 5.7 mile loop that is perfect for wildlife sightings, hikers, runners, mountain bikers, and those wishing to enjoy the beauty of the surrounding hills.
Located near Walnut Creek, the trail is easily accessible from anywhere in the Bay Area. The trail is kept open year-round, and happens to be part of the American Discovery Trail and the Coast to Crest trail. If you are not done hiking, connecting trails allow you to summit Mt. Diablo.
This trail is dog friendly - but when you reach Mount Diablo State Park, please note that the park does not allow dogs.
Several washouts make the trail a bit more technical than it used to be, so be cautious after it rains.

5 stars for being a safe place to take your behaved off leash dog. Trails are well maintained. Horses are on this trail too and they always have the right of way. Watch out for horse manure because it’s everywhere. Most of the inclines are intermediate level with maybe 800’ of elevation tops. Trails are wide for the most part. This spot is our go to weekend day hike and we probably spend about 2-3 hours here before heading back to civilization but it would be easy to spend all day. Parking is abundant with 3 different lots. There’s even a pool and baseball field during the summer that’s open to all.
