Mile Rock Beach

This rocky, secluded beach is tucked in along the Land’s End Coastal Trail in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Located 100 or so steps down from the main trail, you’ll find this mysterious little beach that will make you feel like you’re in an old pirate movie. There are a lot of logs and different places to sit down, unpack your favorite drinks and snacks, and take in the views.

You’ll also notice a narrow trail that takes you up to a lookout above the beach. If you decide to explore up there, you’ll be rewarded with a cool labyrinth and amazing views of Baker Beach and the Golden Gate Bridge.

To get to Mile Rock Beach, enter the Lands End Trail at El Camino del Mar and Point Lobos Avenue, just up the hill from the Sutro Baths. (The usual trail entrance at the back of the Merrie Way parking lot is closed until the spring.) About a half mile into the hike, you’ll see the sign for the Mile Rock Beach viewpoint. Simply follow the signage off of the main trail and it will lead you to the steps down to the lookout.

To return to the Coastal Trail, walk up the steps all the way from the beach or return on the path to the lookout and walk up from there.
