Stepstone Falls, nestled within Rhode Island’s expansive Arcadia Management Area, is a serene series of cascades along the Falls River. Accessible via the Ben Utter Trail, this hike offers nature enthusiasts a tranquil journey through picturesque woodlands leading to the falls.

Trail Overview:

Difficulty: The Ben Utter Trail is generally considered easy and suitable for all ages and skill levels. 

Highlights: Hikers will encounter remnants of old mill foundations, wooden footbridges, and the soothing sounds of the river, culminating at the picturesque Stepstone Falls. 

Hours of Operation:

The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime. 

Fees:

There are no fees required to access the Ben Utter Trail or Stepstone Falls. 

Parking:

Parking is available near the trailhead on Falls River Road. While the area is generally safe, it’s advisable to avoid leaving valuables in your vehicle.

Permits:

No permits are necessary for hiking. However, anglers should familiarize themselves with Rhode Island fishing regulations if they plan to fish in the area. 

Pet Policy:

Dogs are welcome on the trail but must be kept on a leash.

Seasonal Considerations: The flow of Stepstone Falls varies by season. Springtime or periods following rainfall typically offer the most robust water flow, enhancing the falls’ beauty. 

Trail Conditions: The trail is well-marked and maintained, making it suitable for families and casual hikers. It’s also popular for birding, cross-country skiing, and fishing.  

Safety Alert: 

• During hunting seasons, hikers are advised to wear fluorescent orange for visibility. Specific requirements include:

Mid-September to end of February & third Saturday in April to end of May: 200 square inches of solid fluorescent orange (hat or vest).

Early December to early January (shotgun season): 500 square inches (hat AND vest).
