This is a place where both history and nature overlap beautifully
This is an awesome place to check out if spending some time near San Juan. This castle is located on the far side of Old San Juan, offering awesome views of the ocean and surrounding areas.
It costs $7 USD (for adults) to enter, and can be paid at the main entrance when you arrive. This also acts as a pass to other local castles operated by the National Parks Service (keep your receipt for proof). Once you are in, you are free to go and explore! There are different tours that can be provided if you're looking for an in-depth lesson of its history (by outside tourism agencies) but is something that can easily be explored, self-guided, in a few hours.
Once inside, there is access to pretty much every part of the castle. The rooftop has great views of the ocean as well as parts of Old San Juan. In the middle section there are many small rooms with historic information that provides you with a little background of why the fortress was built the way it was and what that particular room was likely used for. Some of these rooms have interior access stairwells that will take you to the bottom with a lookout tower that allows you great spots to sightsee and/or take a break.
If you don't want to pay to go inside, the grassy field outside the walls is free and open to the public! Bring a blanket and lunch and hangout for a few hours with awesome views of the water and a nice, constant breeze. It's a great break from the hustle and bustle of the city while only be a 10 minute walk from the center of Old San Juan. There is also a paved path around the outside of the castle walls, leading you though the grassy fields and down by the water. This is a great area to do some exercise or snap some pictures.

This is a great place to stop when exploring San Juan. I remember there being quite a bit of walking so for those less apt/able to walk there are buggies and buses to help with some of that. Definitely a lot of kite flying on the lawn in front as well!

Fly and kite here
This is a historic site in San Juan. It's also a great place to fly a kite (because of the trade winds).
