Drive to Hat Point Overlook in Hells Canyon

Imnaha, Oregon

Description

Added by Sarah Levant

From the rim of Hells Canyon, overlook the deepest river gorge in North America 5,600 feet below. On each side of the canyon, mountains stand over 10,000 feet tall, with the Seven Devils on the Idaho side and the impressive Wallowas on the Oregon side.

There are no services at Hat Point other than breathtaking views from your picnic table and pit toilets for use before the long ride back to town.

Hells Canyon is the deepest river gorge in North America and the Imnaha Canyon is Northeastern Oregon’s second largest. From the firetower lookout at Hat Point you can take in the heart of the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area with views of the Snake River over 5,000 feet below and two impressive mountain ranges on either side of the Canyon: the Seven Devils Mountain Range to the East and the Wallowas to the West.

To reach Hat Point from Joseph, follow Hwy 350 about 30 miles to Imnaha. From here, a gravel road climbs up the Imnaha River canyon to Hat Point. The road is in very good condition and usually open from June through October. Plan to fill up with gas in Joseph and allow about 1.5 hours each way for the 23.5-mile drive from Imnaha to Hat Point (16% grade the first 6 miles). Take your time, stop frequently for pictures and enjoy the ride.
