The Tualatin River Refuge Seasonal Trail Loop is a peaceful and scenic trail located within the Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge in Sherwood, Oregon, just 30 minutes from downtown Portland. This family-friendly loop opens seasonally (typically May through September) and provides visitors with a unique opportunity to explore restored wetlands, forests, and prairie habitats that are rich with wildlife.

Trail Highlights:

  • The loop follows a flat, well-maintained gravel path, making it accessible for most hikers, including families with children.

  • Enjoy expansive views of wetland areas and the chance to spot birds, deer, turtles, and other native wildlife.

  • Interpretive signs along the way offer insights into the refuge’s ecology and conservation efforts.

Seasonal Access:

  • The Seasonal Trail Loop is only open during dry months, typically from May 1 through September 30, to protect sensitive wildlife habitat during wetter seasons.

  • The main year-round trail (River Trail) remains open throughout the year, but the loop offers deeper access into the refuge.

Permits & Fees:

  • No permit or fee is required to hike the trail or enter the refuge.

  • The refuge is day-use only, open from dawn to dusk.

Parking & Facilities:

  • Free parking is available at the Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center.

  • Restrooms, water fountains, and shaded picnic areas are available near the trailhead.

Pet Policy:

  • Pets are not allowed anywhere on the refuge to protect wildlife. Please leave dogs at home.

Additional Info:

  • Bicycles, running, and jogging are also not permitted on the trails to minimize disturbances to wildlife.

  • Bring binoculars and a camera — the refuge is part of the Pacific Flyway and is excellent for birdwatching.

  • Trails are open rain or shine, but can be hot in summer — bring sun protection and water.

Whether you’re a birder, nature photographer, or just looking for a peaceful walk in nature, the Seasonal Trail Loop at Tualatin River Refuge offers a quiet, immersive experience just outside the city.

Tualatin River Refuge Seasonal Trail Loop Reviews

Beautiful, expansive wildlife preserve with many walking trails and wildlife viewing areas scattered throughout. The north side walks along the Tualatin River through lush trees, whereas the rest is fairly open. Lots of benches for resting and there is a lunch spot with picnic tables near the visitor center entrance on the east side. Go at sunrise or sunset if you want a quieter experience.
