Description

Added by Outbound

One of the most iconic hikes in the Eugene area, Spencer Butte offers sweeping 360° views of the Willamette Valley, Cascade peaks, and surrounding forestlands. The Fox Hollow Trailhead provides a slightly longer, more peaceful route to the summit, winding through lush second-growth forest, mossy Douglas firs, and fern-covered slopes before reaching the rocky summit block. This route is perfect for hikers looking to enjoy the scenic beauty of the butte with fewer crowds than the more direct Spencer Butte main trail.

Trail Overview

  • Location: Spencer Butte Park, Eugene, Oregon

  • Trailhead: Fox Hollow Road Trailhead (not the main Spencer Butte trailhead)

  • Difficulty: Moderate

  • Estimated Time: 2–3 hours

What to Expect

  • The trail starts from the Fox Hollow Trailhead and begins with a gentle climb through thick forest canopy.

  • After about a mile, it connects with the Ridgeline Trail, continuing along wooded terrain with occasional viewpoints and well-built switchbacks.

  • The final stretch to the summit includes a short but steep rock scramble—non-technical, but requires good footing.

  • At the summit, you’re rewarded with unmatched views of the city of Eugene, the Coast Range, and (on clear days) Mount Jefferson, the Three Sisters, and even Mount Hood.

Dogs

  • Dogs are allowed on the trail and summit, but must be on leash at all times.

  • Be cautious on the summit scramble section with pets.

  • Please clean up after your dog and pack out all waste.

Hours & Access

  • Open year-round, dawn to dusk

  • Free to access – no permit or entry fee required

  • Trail is accessible in all seasons, but the summit rocks can be slippery in rain or snow

Parking & Trailhead Info

  • Fox Hollow Trailhead has a small gravel parking lot with room for about 10–12 vehicles

  • No restrooms or water at this trailhead

  • Located off Fox Hollow Road, just south of Eugene

  • Trail is well-marked with signage for Ridgeline Trail and Spencer Butte Summit Trail

Tips for Your Hike

  • Wear sturdy shoes with good traction, especially for the summit scramble

  • Bring layers – the weather can change quickly, and the summit is often breezy

  • The trail is shaded most of the way, but bring water, especially on warmer days

  • Great for trail running, birdwatching, and forest photography

  • Visit early morning or on weekdays to avoid heavier weekend traffic on the summit

Camping & Other Activities

  • No camping is allowed at Spencer Butte or along the Ridgeline Trail system

  • Nearby camping options include Willamette National Forest campgrounds or local Eugene-area RV parks and campgrounds

  • The area is popular for mountain biking, though Spencer Butte itself is hiking-only

Summary

Hiking to Spencer Butte from the Fox Hollow Trailhead offers a more scenic and peaceful approach to one of Eugene’s best-known outdoor destinations. With forested trails, wildlife sightings, and panoramic summit views, it’s a rewarding half-day adventure for hikers of all experience levels.
