Permits & Access

  • No permit is required. The preserve is free to visit, open daily from dawn to dusk, year-round.

Parking & Trailheads

Why You’ll Love This Loop

  • Habitat Diversity: Stroll through forests, pine stands, meadows, ravines, and grasslands—great for nature lovers.
  • Historical & Cultural Meaning: Trails are named after formerly enslaved families (Holman, Jordan, Justice, etc.), honoring Black heritage and resilience. Informational kiosks share their stories.
  • Wildlife & Birding: Expect sightings of bobwhite quail, woodcock, pileated woodpeckers, deer, turkey, and songbirds. Grasslands attract pollinators like monarchs and native bees.
  • Quiet & Peaceful: Despite being near Durham, this preserve feels serene and uncrowded—perfect for mindful walking or solitude.
  • Trail Length & Challenge: The nearly 7-mile loop offers moderate elevation changes (~327 ft gain) for a good workout or long, reflective walk/run.
  • Family & Education Friendly: Includes a gentle interpretative trail (“That Makes Sense”) with educational signs about wildlife and senses—a hit with kids and curious visitors.
  • Community Engagement: Participate in TLC’s Hiking Challenge or contribute to citizen science through eBird sightings on-site

Great place to take an early morning walk and enjoy nature. There are several loops that go through the forest with good shade cover for hikes at anytime during the day. Very little incline making it perfect for all ages and activity levels.
