Hiking along a snowy alpine ridge to a cozy hut located on the shore of a frozen river makes this a wonderful winter destination and an appropriate introduction to winter overnight trips.
This is a popular and crowded route in summer months, but in winter you could have this 28 bunk hut with a stove all to yourself!
Begin by climbing switchbacks to the summit of Mt Roberts and then following the crest of Robert Ridge. The route is exposed in a few places and an un-checked fall on snow could have serious consequences, but if you are competent with an ice axe and crampons passage along the ridge should be straightforward.
Eventually you will reach the end of Robert Ridge and the beginning of the descent into Lake Angelus Basin where you will find the hut. Chances for an epic glissade here!
This overnight hike can be a great introduction to winter camping. Either take it easy and stay in the hut, or test your winter camping skills knowing that if the weather or your gear just isn't working you can bail into the safety of the hut.
