About this place

Added by Outbound

This scenic out-and-back hike in Letchworth State Park takes you through forested gorge rim views, up toward the iconic Inspiration Point overlook, and down into the gorge for a dramatic view of Lower Falls on the Genesee River.

What You’ll See & Experience

  • The trail follows the Gorge Trail (Trail #1) from near the southern entrance of the park, crossing near Middle Falls and climbing to Inspiration Point—where you’ll be rewarded with expansive views of Middle & Upper Falls and the train trestle above them.

  • From Inspiration Point you descend (or continue) toward Lower Falls. At Lower Falls you’ll see the stone footbridge across the Genesee River and the deep canyon rushing below. The setting feels remote and dramatic.

  • The gorge walls rise steeply, offering a real sense of “Grand Canyon of the East” scale. The Genesee River carved this landscape—expect sweeping ridgelines, forest canopy, and river vista surprises.

Access, Parking & Trail Conditions

  • Trailhead / Parking: Use the southern section of Letchworth State Park near the Portageville/Portage entrance. Park at the lot near the Glen Iris area or the Inspiration Point lot.

  • Trail Length & Difficulty: 4.1 mi round-trip, moderate difficulty, with ~1,161 ft elevation gain.

  • Surface & Terrain: Forest trail, rocky sections, some steep climbs/descents, sections along the gorge rim. Some parts may include stairs or steeper drops near viewpoints—good footwear recommended.

  • Dogs: Leashed dogs are permitted.

  • Fees & Season: The park charges a day-use fee (especially May‐October). Trails are accessible year-round, though winter conditions may add complexity.

  • Safety & Access Tips:

    • Stay on marked trails—edges have steep drops.

    • Bring plenty of water and be ready for the climb back.

    • Early arrival helps avoid crowds and find parking.

    • Fall foliage is spectacular but also busiest time.

Why Visit?

  • Walk through a truly majestic gorge setting—towering cliffs, the rushing Genesee River, and dramatic waterfalls.

  • Get two standout viewpoints: Inspiration Point’s sweeping overlook, and Lower Falls’ intimate canyon and stone-bridge vantage.

  • It’s a manageable half-day hike with big payoff—about 4 miles out and back, yet packed with scenery.

  • Great for photography—from sweeping vistas to waterfall close-ups to fall color.

  • Suitable for active hikers who want more than a short stroll but don’t want a full backcountry trek.
