Description

Added by Tamara Stawicki

Norvin Green State Forest is one of the best-kept secrets in the New Jersey Highlands — a rugged, rewarding stretch of the Ramapo Mountains that rewards hikers with rocky summits, cascading waterfalls, stream crossings, and sweeping ridge views. The 8-mile loop with 1,538 feet of elevation gain is a legitimate workout that feels far removed from the surrounding suburbs, yet sits less than an hour from New York City.

The Trail

The loop connects several of Norvin Green's signature trails through a varied landscape of dense hardwood forest, exposed ridgeline, and stream-carved valleys. Expect rocky, rooty terrain throughout — this is classic NJ Highlands hiking, not a groomed path.

  • Distance: 8 miles (loop)
  • Elevation gain: 1,538 ft
  • Difficulty: Moderate to strenuous
  • Terrain: Rocky, rooty, stream crossings — sturdy hiking boots recommended

Highlights

Wyanokie High Point is the crown jewel of the loop — an open, rocky summit with panoramic views across the Highlands, the Wanaque Reservoir, and on clear days, the Manhattan skyline on the horizon. It's a genuine payoff for the climbing.

Waterfalls are a consistent highlight throughout the route. Post Brook Falls and Chikahoki Falls are among the most visited — best after rain or during spring snowmelt when flow is at its peak.

Stream crossings add character to the lower sections of the loop — fun in dry conditions, worth wearing gaiters or bringing dry socks after heavy rain.

Seasonal Guide

  • Spring — peak waterfall flow, wildflowers emerging, muddy in sections after rain
  • Summer — forest canopy provides good shade; go early to beat crowds and heat
  • Fall — outstanding foliage, especially from the open ridges and Wyanokie High Point; the most popular season
  • Winter — beautiful and uncrowded; icy rocks on the ridge require microspikes

Tips

  • Arrive early on weekends — the parking lots at Glenwild Avenue are small and fill up fast, especially in fall. Weekday visits are significantly more relaxed
  • Navigation: The trail network is complex with multiple intersecting blazed trails — download an offline map before you go
  • Dogs: Welcome on leash
  • No fee: Norvin Green is a state forest, not a park — free access year-round
