A scenic paved pathway around the Sandy Hook peninsula
A beautiful paved pathway that travels 8.7 miles along beaches and historical monuments located on the Sandy Hook peninsula. The path begins at the Gateway National Recreation Area and loops around Fort Hancock, a former U.S. base that housed 12,000 soldiers at its peak during WWII. Along the way, you will catch glimpses of beaches and the Sandy Hook Lighthouse, the oldest working lighthouse in the United States.
Dogs are allowed on the pathway but must be leashed. To get to the Sandy Hook peninsula, one can drive and park in one of the parkign lots (parking is $10 from Memorial Day to Labor Day and tends to fill up on warm summer days by 11:30am!). For driving, put Gateway National Recreation Area into your GPS, you will take exit 109 off of the Garden State Parkway. Or, if you're coming from NYC, take the Seastreak Ferry that departs from the dock at E. 35th St. Starting in May, there are two trips a day at 8:45am and 11am with only one return trip at 4:10pm.
Your ride will never get tedious on the Sandy Hook pathway!
