Why It's the Best Basecamp in the Whites
Lafayette Place is positioned at the geographic center of Franconia Notch State Park — meaning many of the park's headline attractions are accessible directly from the campground via the Franconia Notch Recreation Path (a paved bike and walking trail) without ever starting your car:
- Lonesome Lake — a ~3-mile round-trip hike through forest to a glassy alpine lake with stunning views of Franconia Ridge. AMC's Lonesome Lake Hut sits on the shore for lunch or coffee.
- The Basin — a 20-foot deep granite pothole with a waterfall pouring into it. Smooth, sculpted granite and crystal-clear water make it one of the most photographed spots in the Whites.
- Flume Gorge — a glacially-carved gorge with 90-foot granite walls, lush ferns and moss, and the historic Sentinel Covered Bridge. Small admission fee (~$18) but worth it.
- Franconia Notch Bike Path — paved, mostly flat, runs nearly the full length of the notch. Connects all major attractions.
For more ambitious hikers, the campground is also a perfect launchpad for Mount Lafayette and the Franconia Ridge Loop — one of the most legendary hikes in the eastern US, with miles of above-treeline ridgeline and 360° views.
Major Hikes from / Near the Campground
- Lonesome Lake Trail — 3 miles round-trip, easy, family-friendly
- Cascade Brook Trail — connects to the AT
- Franconia Ridge Loop (via Falling Waters + Old Bridle Path) — 8.9 miles, 3,900 ft gain, advanced — Little Haystack → Mt. Lincoln → Mt. Lafayette. One of the classic ridge hikes in America.
- Mt. Lafayette via Old Bridle Path — 7.5 miles out-and-back to a 5,260 ft summit
- Appalachian Trail access — the AT passes directly through the notch

What to Bring

- Bug spray — mosquitoes and black flies in June and early July
- Cash or card for the camp store and Flume Gorge admission

Why Franconia Notch is Special
Franconia Notch is a dramatic glacially-carved gorge between the Franconia Range and the Kinsman Range — featuring towering granite cliffs, waterfalls, mountain lakes, and some of the best alpine hiking south of the Whites. It's been a New England icon for over a century, drawing everyone from Thoreau to modern thru-hikers attempting the AT. Camping at Lafayette Place puts you right in the middle of all of it.
