About this place

Added by Emily Schrick

Downtown Ely has more than 20 murals installed throughout the historic district, most of them concentrated along E Aultman Street and Highway 50, which is the main road through town.

The murals were organized by the Ely Renaissance Society, which was founded in 1999 to preserve Ely's history and culture from the copper mining era. Together they tell the story of the many groups who came to Ely during the early 1900s boom. Each mural is numbered, corresponding to a stop on the official walking tour.

Adventure Type: Self-guided walking and cultural tour.

Surface: Sidewalks and paved streets.

Best Time to Visit: Year-round; spring and fall offer the most comfortable temperatures for walking.

A free audio tour is available at elynevada.net, and brochures with a tour map and artist information can be found at most businesses in town as well as at the Visit Ely Welcome Center in the Bristlecone Convention Center. The tour pairs well with a meal downtown, making it a perfect way to spend a half day. Renaissance Village, the Ely Renaissance Society's collection of restored historic miners' cabins representing various cultural backgrounds, is located at 400 Ely St and offers a deeper look at the same history.
