Added by Outbound

This is a short but rewarding outing: The hike to Monkey Rock is around 2.6 miles round-trip with about 460 feet of elevation gain.

It’s located just above the northeast shore of Lake Tahoe near Incline Village, Nevada, and is famous for the granite formation shaped like a monkey (hence the name) — and the stunning lake views you get at the top.

What to Expect

  • Trailhead & Access: Start at the parking lot near Tunnel Creek Café on Highway 28 (or Tahoe Blvd) near Incline Village.

  • Route: The trail begins with a gentle grade, then shifts into a steeper section as you approach the viewpoint. As you climb, the views open up over Lake Tahoe.

  • At the summit: You’ll reach the “monkey‐shaped” boulder and a vantage point that looks across the lake and out toward distant ridges and peaks. The rock makes for a fun photo subject, especially at sunrise or sunset.

  • Time: Most hikers complete it in about 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on stops and pace.

Rules, Amenities & Tips

  • Fee/Parking: Parking may require a fee; check signage at the lot near Tunnel Creek Café.

  • Dogs: Leashed dogs are permitted.

  • Seasonal Access: Open year-round, but winter conditions (snow/ice) may make it more challenging—bring proper gear if hiking in winter.

  • Surface & Difficulty: Mostly a well-defined trail, but the final stretch is steep. Good footwear recommended.

  • Safety & View Etiquette: Stay on the trail; the view is the reward, not risking unsafe sections.

  • Best Times: Early morning or late afternoon for golden light; sunset is especially popular. But arriving early helps avoid parking congestion.

Why Visit?

  • Take in panoramic views of Lake Tahoe you don’t often get from so close to the water.

  • The quirky and eye-catching “monkey-shaped boulder” makes for a fun stop and photo moment.

  • Quick, accessible hike with great payoff for relatively little time and effort.

  • Excellent spot for sunset watchers or photographers—the lake and mountain light combine beautifully.

  • Dog-friendly (on leash) and suitable for many levels of hikers looking for a scenic outing without an all-day commitment.

Monkey Rock Reviews

Fairly easy to find the trail head. May have to pay for parking at the newer lots but worth the price of admission to see this giant monkey carved boulder. Trail is a bit steep. Offers an incredible view of Lake Tahoe from the top. Bring lots of water and watch out for mountain bikes that also use this trail.

The views are amazing. The rock is at the top and then down a little to the right.

This hike is fairly steep all the way up but definitely worth the view. Dogs and mountain bikes are welcome. Keep an eye out for the Monkey at the top.
