Gold Butte National Monument

Gold Butte National Monument, Nevada

Description

Added by Emily Schrick

Gold Butte National Monument is a vast swath of rugged Mojave Desert northeast of Las Vegas and south of Mesquite.

Dramatic red sandstone cliffs, twisting canyons, and endless desert vistas set the stage for an unforgettable outdoor escape. Covering nearly 300,000 acres, this remote monument blends natural beauty with deep cultural history.

Adventure Type: Multi-use desert exploration.
Terrain: Sandstone formations, rocky hills, washes, and open desert. Difficulty: Easy to strenuous, depending on activity and route. Best Time to Visit: Cooler seasons (fall through spring) for the most comfortable desert conditions. Note: Cell service may be spotty, so consider a GPS locator.

Gold Butte isn’t a single trail; it’s a wild, sprawling landscape waiting to be explored on foot, horseback, or from the seat of a high-clearance vehicle (the road is partially paved and partially unpaved - there are potholes, but the road is wide in most spots). Many visitors use the scenic Gold Butte Back Country Byway as a backbone for their journey, winding through towering sandstone walls, sinkholes, and historic sites. Primitive camping spots like Whitney Pocket offer the chance to stretch your legs, explore hoodoos and fins, or watch the sunset paint the desert orange and red.

The road is okay for all vehicles to Whitney Pocket. After that, high-clearance, 4WD vehicles are recommended and don't forget to bring a full-sized spare tire.

Hours of Use: Open daily: sunrise to sunset.
Parking and Facilities: Parking and access points are informal and spread throughout the monument. There are no developed facilities, so come prepared with water and supplies.
Permits & Fees: Free public access; no permits or fees required for general recreation.
Are Dogs Allowed: Yes, but should be kept under control, especially in remote and rugged areas.

    What to Bring:
    - Ample water (more than you think you’ll need)
    - Extra food
    - Extra gas
    - Sun protection, hat, and layered clothing
    - Sturdy footwear for uneven terrain

While visiting, please follow the Dirt Road Code.
