Ballardini Ranch Trail is a popular 2.3-mile loop trail nestled in the foothills of southwest Reno, offering panoramic views of the Truckee Meadows and the Sierra Nevada mountains. This former working ranch, now preserved as public land, provides hikers and mountain bikers with a quintessential high desert trail experience.
The trail climbs approximately 226 feet through sagebrush-covered hills and Jeffrey pine woodland, offering a moderate hiking experience that's accessible year-round. Starting from the Thomas Creek trailhead, the well-maintained path features several switchbacks as it ascends, providing increasingly impressive views of Reno's cityscape and the surrounding mountains.
A highlight of this trail is its diverse seasonal offerings: spring brings colorful wildflower displays including lupine and arrowleaf balsamroot, while fall offers crisp hiking weather and golden light. The trail's south-facing exposure makes it particularly popular during winter months when other local trails are snow-covered.

Ballardini Ranch Trail Reviews
Adequate parking and an easy trail to follow. Multi-use for hiking, biking, horseback riding, and dog friendly. Great for trail running with a mild grade and longer switchbacks on the climbs. Much flatter and easier once you crest the top of the hill! No shade but at this time of year a lot of it is shaded in the afternoon due to the low sun angle.
