Lamoille Canyon Scenic Drive

Set roughly 22 miles south of Elko, NV the Lamoille Canyon Scenic Byway is a paved, 12-mile route through the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. It ends at the Ruby Crest Trailhead, making it a worthwhile destination on its own or a launching point for further exploration. The drive winds through a U-shaped valley carved by glaciers in the Ruby Mountains, with the road gradually narrowing as it climbs deeper into the range.

Adventure Type: Scenic drive with optional short walk.

Surface: Paved road with pull-offs; semi-paved walking path at the end.

Difficulty: Easy. Accessible by most vehicles.

Best Time to Visit: Late spring through early fall (the byway is typically open May through October).

As you drive in, most of the best viewpoints are on the passenger side of the car, so plan accordingly if you're traveling solo. There are several pull-offs along the way to stop and take in the canyon walls and surrounding peaks. At the end of the road, a short, semi-paved path follows Lamoille Creek, which is a nice spot to linger before heading back down. Pit toilets are available at the end of the road.

Keep an eye out for wildlife along the drive! Elk, mule deer, and bighorn sheep are occasionally spotted in the canyon.

Hours of Use: Open daily during the season (typically May through October, weather permitting).

Parking and Facilities: Pull-offs throughout the byway; a larger parking area and pit toilets at the Ruby Crest Trailhead at the road's end.

Permits & Fees: No entry fee for the scenic drive.

Are Dogs Allowed: Yes, on a leash.
