About this place

Added by Emily Schrick

South Fork State Recreation Area sits at the foot of the Ruby Mountains in northeastern Nevada, where a reservoir tucked into rolling hills provides a perfect base for a camping and fishing trip.

The South Fork of the Humboldt River feeds the reservoir and the surrounding landscape is meadow and bluff, with the Ruby Mountains providing a backdrop to the west - a view that's easy to appreciate from virtually any campsite.

Adventure Type: Camping, fishing, and boating.

Surface: Paved park roads; open shoreline; boat ramps.

Difficulty: Easy, suitable for all experience levels.

Best Time to Visit: Late spring through early fall.

Campsites in the 25-site East Campground are set close to the water, making it easy to fish from shore or head out on the lake. Two boat ramps are available: the main launch, which has ample parking, and the southwest shore ramp, which is better suited for smaller boats and float tubes.

The reservoir holds catfish, bass, and trophy-class trout. Wildlife in the area includes mule deer, beavers, badgers, and a variety of waterfowl.

Hours of Use: Park always open; Ranger Station hours vary seasonally.

Parking and Facilities: Paved parking near the campground and boat ramps; campground includes tables, fire grills, and a restroom with showers; RV dump station available.

Permits & Fees: $5 day use fee per vehicle ($10 for out-of-state vehicles); camping $15/night; boat launch $10. A fishing license is required.

Are Dogs Allowed: Yes, on a leash

What to Bring:

  • Fishing license and gear
