Lake Mead: the Largest Man-Made Lake in the USA

For 6 months due to work I was living in a rather un-lively city in Arizona. I was grateful to discover Lake Mead my first weekend there.

There is so much to do at Lake Mead!  And, of course, it's just down the road from Vegas so it's an easy stop if you are heading towards Las Vegas or using that airport.

Specifics:

  • Hiking trails; Callville Summit was a fun one. No shade here of course, so bring a hat and plenty of water.
  • Hoover Dam is close by and worth a stop
  • Fee to enter, but your NPS annual pass works if you have one
  • Lake Mead National Recreation Area became the first national recreation area in 1964
  • Willow Beach is a popular place to rent kayaks from
  • Here’s a list of scenic drives
  • Here’s the different beaches you can relax at; one I recommend is PWC Beach.
  • The Lake Mead Visitor Center is located off of U.S. 93, just 4 miles southeast of Boulder City.
