Beautiful frozen lake. Good ice fishing for big trout. Easy access, no hiking. 360 degree mountain views.

Hebgen Lake is a beautiful lake, just outside of Yellowstone National Park. With 21 square miles of surface, there's plenty to fish.

A favorite place to access the lake for ice fishing is by Kirkwood Resort and Marina. There's easy parking, and you can just walk right out on the lake. The locals there will be very friendly, and give you pointers if you've never been ice fishing.

Ice fishing can require a lot more patience than other kinds of fishing, but with plenty of fish in Hebgen Lake, you're likely to hook in to something! This lake is full of trout, including brown and rainbow trout. The average size is 14-18 inches, but something over 20" is not uncommon. This is an easy trip for beginners, with no hiking required, unless you want to explore further out on the lake.
