Hike to Gorge Lake in the Pioneer Mountains, Dillon, Montana

This trip starts when you turn right off 1-90 from Dillon going towards Butte at the Birch Creek turn off. The road forks twice before you reach the Gorge Lakes Trailhead and Campsite. The first fork take a right up a hill and the second take a left down a hill. IMPORTANT NOTE: You will need clearance on your vehicle! Parts of this road get pretty rough especially towards the end right before the trailhead.Once you reach the trailhead you will traverse 4 miles and gain about 2,000 feet in elevation through dense forest. Be aware of wildlife. The wilderness in this area is not visited commonly. Most of the hike is consistently uphill (could be difficult for beginner hikers) and through forest with a few clearings to admire the view of the Pioneers in the backdrop. It is absolutely breathtaking, making you feel like you are truly in the middle of nowhere.About 3 miles into the hike the scenery starts to get more rocky. You are getting close now! Just remember to keep your eye on the trail markings carved into the trees along the main trail. We got a bit confused at one part of the trail because it appeared to have forked left. It was most likely just an animal trail, but it was just a well traversed as the original trail that will take you to the lake. Just be aware of your surroundings and you will be fine!When you get there you won't want to leave. The trail suddenly opens up into a clearing where the lake is nestled amongst the massive mountains. Sit alongside the rocks lining the lake and take it all in! Or bring a rod and cast a few lines! Whatever you decide to do enjoy your time there. It's beauty is something that cannot be captured in photos or words.
