This is a scenic mountain lake located at the foot of the Tobacco Root Mountains that will challenge any off-road vehicle.

To access the lake, take South Meadow Creek Road that exits US 287 at McAllister, MT. This dirt road will head west into the Tobacco Roots before turning into FS Road 1221 approximately 3 miles before the lake. If you are in a vehicle not equipped for off-roading, park your vehicle where FS Road 1224 branches off to the right and continue on foot. For the next 2-3 miles the road continues as a single lane over uneven terrain which requires high ground clearance. Part way up the trail you will pass the remnants of the Missouri-McKee Mine.

The road meets the lake at the eastern tip and only stretches to each side of the lake for a few hundred feet, so it is wise to bring a canoe/kayak to paddle gear across and camp (the majority of the eastern portion of the lake was already claimed by the time we got there). Once camp is set up enjoy the fishing/cliff jumping/ and relaxing the lake has to offer.

Camp at South Meadow Creek Lake Reviews

very beautiful lake, not many people at all (we went a saturday-sunday and there were two other tents). you NEED a vehicle that can handle off roading if you don’t want to walk. We had a decent truck and made it, but it was rough. View is worth the drive.
