A beautiful hike along the Temperance River and up to the top of Carlton Peak provides hikers with scenic views of Lake Superior and the surrounding Temperance River Valley.
One of the trailheads for this hike begins at Temperance River State Park. Parking can be found alongside Highway 61. The Superior Hiking Trail passes through this park and this is the trail you will follow to reach Carlton Peak. The trail follows the Temperance River and is relatively flat until it turns right and starts to ascend up to Carlton Peak (325 ft. elevation gain). As you get closer, the terrain becomes more rocky and involves a bit of scrambling.
At the top of the peak, you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of Lake Superior and the surrounding Temperance River Valley. This is a great place to stop for a picnic lunch. After enjoying the views, head back down the same way you came. Total mileage out and back is 6.2 miles. Be sure to check out the river gorge south of Highway 61 before heading out.
